Meet Valma James - founder of carers today

Valma is a qualified Social Worker and Registered Nurse and a member of the Medical Journalists Association. Her career is within the public, statutory and private sector in strategic management, developing and delivering social and health related projects.

 

Valma received commendation for her work with developing services for ethnic minorities  from  Dr John Reid Secretary of Health and Chief Medical Officer (DOH, 1999). She is dedicated in improving health and social care services, promoting human rights and equality of opportunity through social and  economic engagement.

Valma also initiated the first Barnet Youth Council, and Luton West Indian Associations Summer School as well as the first Parental workshop whilst employed by Open University. She was also instrumental in influencing the development of the Bedfordshire school mentoring scheme for Bedfordshire African and Caribbean Forum in partnership with Bedford Education Action Zone.

In addition, she was also a volunteer Coach with Luton Children at Risk. She is a Health and Wellbeing Coach, the radio Host for Cultur’us with AUKRADIO as well as radio host for “My Body is My Temple with Hospital Radio Bedford( HRM). She is passionate about coaching children and adults to be the best they can be through embracing education and personal development training. She is also committed to contributing to improving the quality of life for family carers of children with learning disabilities -autism and mental health Valma works with adults with leaning disabilities and recognised the challenges that adults with learning disabilities experience when they are excluded from educational and social opportunities and aims to ensure that parents have the necessary skills and information to empower them to make the right choices for their child education and future development.
